The European Commission said that Bulgaria has requested the activation of the Rapid Alert System ahead of the early parliamentary elections in the country on April 19, BTA reported. The system will remain in effect for the country until April 26, a Commission spokesperson clarified at a press conference.

“The entire toolbox at the disposal of the EU can potentially support any election in the Member States so that citizens can make neutral decisions”, the spokesperson said.

“The European Commission has the capacity to ensure cooperation between Member States for the exchange of information and experience, including with civil society and fact-checkers”, the spokesperson added. He noted that there are also opportunities for additional assistance in emergencies, as well as for the exchange of alerts through the system of the European External Action Service.
