Bulgaria's Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad (EABA) will present awards to the winners of its three annual competitions for children and young people at a ceremony on Aug. 7 at the National Palace of Children in Sofia.

More than 1,000 children took part in this year's editions of the Stefan Gechev literary competition, the Bulgaria in My Dreams art competition and the Lyubka Rondova Bulgarian folk song contest.

The 2026 competitions were dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising and the 170th anniversary of the birth of Rayna Knyaginya, one of its most prominent figures.

Prize winners from more than 10 countries are expected to attend the ceremony. More than 40 children will also receive the agency's special award – participation in a 10-day educational summer camp in the village of Brodilovo. The initiative aims to help young Bulgarians living abroad become better acquainted with Bulgaria's culture, traditions and natural heritage, while giving them the opportunity to make new friends.

An exhibition of the winning artworks will open after the ceremony, followed by performances by participants in the folk song competition.

Radio Bulgaria will provide special coverage of the winners of all three competitions.

PM Radev tells foreign critics to get the facts first on Bansko row

Prime Minister Rumen Radev urged foreign politicians who criticised Bulgaria over an incident between Bulgarian and Italian youths in Bansko to first establish the facts.

Speaking to reporters, Radev said Bulgaria's institutions and society had consistently rejected xenophobia, racism and antisemitism, adding that the authorities had also condemned hate speech in connection with the incident.

"We are ready to present all the facts," he said.

Radev also called on all visitors to Bulgaria to respect the country's laws, the dignity of its citizens and private property, and to refrain from behaviour that could provoke tensions.

He added that Bulgarians had demonstrated tolerance towards different ethnic and religious communities throughout history. Referring to the Second World War, Radev said Bulgaria had saved its Jewish community from Nazi concentration camps, describing it as "a moral lesson for all of Europe that should not be forgotten."

According to BTA, the remarks followed a verbal altercation on Aug. 2 between Bulgarian youths and Italian students in the mountain resort of Bansko. Police said the Italian students reported being threatened and subjected to antisemitic insults. Officers intervened promptly, preventing the situation from escalating, and no physical violence was reported.

Center for space technologies and innovations will be built near Sofia

We will finally start building what I have been talking about since 2020 – a national center for observation, coordination and management of space data, so that the Bulgarian state can manage important processes in various fields. This was what Prime Minister Rumen Radev said in the Dobroslavtsi economic zone near Sofia, BTA reported.

“The high-tech industrial park with a space and defence development center will give a boost to the municipalities in the region,” Radev added. “Here we will see a collective image of the government’s economic policy – investments in knowledge, high-tech production, security industry, scientific research and development. Bulgaria will transform from a country that consumes technologies into a country that creates them. The success of the initiative will not be measured only by the size of the investments and the number of jobs created. It will be measured by the fact that in this way we will develop and retain the talent of young Bulgarians here,” Radev added.

Deputy Ambassador of Israel visits Bansko unofficially

The Mayor of Bansko Municipality Stoycho Banenski held an informal meeting with the Deputy Ambassador of Israel to Bulgaria Tadian Poplinger. He is among the diplomats who maintain an active interest in the development of Bansko and has visited the city on several occasions.

The conversation was dedicated to the opportunities for deepening bilateral contacts in tourism, culture and sports. It was noted that in recent years more and more citizens of Israel have been choosing Bansko not only for tourism in all seasons, but also as a place for long-term stay. Israeli citizens are among the most active participants in the local real estate market, and many of them are already part of the Bansko community, actively participating in the public, cultural and economic life of the town. The good tradition of prominent performers from Israel participating in the program of the international Bansko Jazz Festival was also pointed out.

Intense traffic of cars at Kalotina border crossing

Traffic is intense for passenger cars entering from Serbia at Kalotina border crossing, the Border Police announced. At the other border crossings with Türkiye, Greece, North Macedonia and Romania, traffic is normal for the season.

Due to cleaning of road signs, the organization of traffic in the “Topli Dol” tunnel on the “Hemus” highway will be temporarily changed tonight, the Road Infrastructure Agency announced. Vehicles will be redirected in stages to the overtaking lane in the direction to Varna from 9 p.m. on August 6 until midnight. From 12:30 a.m. to 6 a.m. on August 7, the restriction will be transferred to the tunnel in the direction of Sofia, as the speed limit will be 50 km/h. Restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles over 20 tons in the afternoon hours due to the heat also remain in effect.

Cabinet proposes parliament to lift diesel fuel export restriction

The government will propose to the National Assembly that the temporary ban on fuel exports be lifted. The ban was introduced on October 31, 2025 and covered the export, including to EU member states, of certain types of petroleum products - diesel fuel with and without bioadditives, kerosene, industrial fuels and oils from bituminous minerals, BTA reports.

The decision was made at that time to guarantee the country's energy security and the stability of the domestic fuel market after the sanctions imposed by the US against Lukoil. In addition, the motives were that this would prevent potential attempts at speculation.

The export ban did not stop the rise in prices after the beginning of the Strait of Hormuz crisis. Diesel in the country now has an average price of 1.78 euros per litre.

Space and technology center to be built near Sofia

Audit Office opens conflict of interest probe into DPS leader Peevski

Bulgaria's Audit Office has opened a conflict of interest investigation into Delyan Peevski, leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) and a long-serving member of parliament.

The proceedings were launched following a complaint filed on July 31 by Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev, alleging discrepancies between Peevski's declared income and assets and his actual lifestyle.

The investigation will cover the past three years, as provided for under Bulgaria's anti-corruption law governing public officials. It is scheduled to be completed within three months, although the deadline may be extended if the case proves factually or legally complex.

New institute to reveal the secrets of the medieval Balkans

The Council of Ministers has approved the opening of the Institute "Center for Slavic-Byzantine Studies Prof. Ivan Dujčev" as a unit in the structure of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". Sofia Municipality denies it owns property where fentanyl lab operated

The Sofia Municipality has denied widespread information that the property, where an illegal fentanyl production laboratory was discovered yesterday, was owned by the Sofia Municipality. "As it can be seen from the cadastral registers, the owner of the property is the National Center for Agrarian Science (the Agricultural Academy)" the municipality noted. The Agricultural Academy confirmed that the property belongs to the institution. It was leased in June 2024 for a five-year period following a standard public tender procedure. The Academy said it would provide the necessary assistance to the competent authorities conducting the investigation, BNR's Veselina Milanova reported.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Interior announced that the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime discovered a high-tech fentanyl laboratory in an agricultural hall in the Sofia district of "Fakulteta", which is believed to have produced the entire amount of the risky narcotic substance distributed in the country.

Bulgarian journalist and writer Dimitar Shumnaliev dies

Prominent Bulgarian journalist and fiction writer Dimitar Shumnaliev has died after a long illness, his family announced. He was 79.

Born on March 3, 1947, Shumnaliev graduated in Bulgarian philology from Sofia University before specialising in French language and literature at the University of Pau in France. He later completed the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa in the United States.

A long-standing member of the Union of Bulgarian Writers, Shumnaliev was the author of numerous novels, novellas and short stories, as well as hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles.

During his career, he worked for several leading Bulgarian newspapers and Bulgarian National Radio, serving as editor-in-chief and deputy editor-in-chief at some of the country's leading newspapers.

His works have been translated into English, Russian, German, French and other languages, and he received numerous literary awards. Among his best-known novels are Ferodo, Sotsroman, Comparsita, Forgiveness, White Jam and Beasts.

Later in life, Shumnaliev also turned to painting. Although he had no formal artistic training, he regarded artists Svetlin Rusev, Suli Seferov and Mihail Lalov as his creative mentors. He never exhibited his work publicly.

Shumnaliev once described short stories as "beautiful nights" and novels as "a long biography." Reflecting his characteristic wit, he also liked to say: "You can remain a bon vivant all your life unless you find something more serious to do."

The team of Radio Bulgaria extends its sincere condolences to Dimitar Shumnaliev's family, friends and colleagues. May he rest in peace.

Sofia condemns all forms of anti-Semitism

Bulgaria categorically condemns all forms of anti-Semitism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote in a statement. The reason is an incident that occurred on August 2, when a group of Bulgarian youths made threats and anti-Semitic insults to Italian students staying at a hotel in Bansko.

"Bulgaria is deeply concerned by reports of anti-Semitic acts directed against a group of young Italian Jews. Such actions are unacceptable and have no place in a democratic society," the statement posted on the social network "X" reads. The ministry is in close contact with the police and the interior ministry to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and is ready to provide assistance to the Italian side, the statement also reads.

Bulgaria's Finance Ministry reports improvement in budget balance in July

Bulgaria received EUR 1 billion under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) last week, Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced at the start of the government meeting on August 5.

The funding will support key projects, including the construction of kindergartens, the renovation of public buildings for greater energy efficiency, the expansion of the Sofia metro, the purchase of medical helicopters and the development of battery energy storage facilities, the prime minister said.

He also noted that in recent weeks the government had successfully renegotiated part of the commitments related to the fifth payment under the Recovery and Resilience Plan. According to the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), work is also continuing to secure funding under the Just Transition Fund for the regions of Stara Zagora, Kyustendil and Pernik.

The Ministry of Finance expects the budget deficit to stand at EUR 2.2 billion by the end of July, equivalent to 1.7% of the projected GDP. The ministry noted that this marks an improvement compared with the end of June, when the deficit exceeded EUR 2.4 billion, or 1.9% of projected GDP.

Bulgaria's State Railways begin renewal of the train fleet

All 20 Škoda electric multiple units purchased under Bulgaria's Recovery and Resilience Plan have now arrived in the country. They are expected to be officially handed over to the Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) on August 5, ahead of schedule, and will enter regular service in Western Bulgaria from August 10, replacing the oldest trains currently in operation, built between 1969 and 1980.

The announcement was made on social media by Simeon Stavrev, a member of the Transport Committee at the Sofia Municipal Council.

The introduction of the new rolling stock will lead to a nationwide redistribution of trains. Siemens electric multiple units, delivered in 2007 and 2008, are expected to be reassigned to Northern Bulgaria after nearly two decades of service in the southern part of the country, Stavrev wrote.

Traffic is flowing normally at all Bulgarian border crossings

Traffic is moving normally at all of Bulgaria's border checkpoints and crossings, according to the Border Police.

Due to the forecast high temperatures, the movement of heavy goods vehicles weighing over 20 tonnes will be suspended between 1:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. until 6 August on the Vidin-Vratsa road and on the Trakia, Maritsa, Hemus, Struma and Europe motorways.

Maintenance work at the Daskalovo interchange on the Struma Motorway, near Pernik, will continue until 7 August. Work will take place nightly from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., with traffic restrictions introduced in stages on both the inner and outer lanes, as well as on the interchange's connecting ramps.

Meanwhile, traffic arrangements on a section of the Trakia Motorway in Sofia and Burgas regions will remain temporarily altered until 1:00 p.m. on 5 August due to roadside vegetation clearance, the Road Infrastructure Agency has announced. During the works, traffic will be diverted to the active lane.

Burgas to host Bulgarian Navy anniversary concert

A series of events this week will mark the 147th anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian Navy.

On Aug. 5, a military ceremony with wreath-laying at the Sailor's Memorial will take place in Varna. Later that evening, the Bulgarian Navy Representative Wind Orchestra will give a free concert in Burgas' Sea Garden, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

As part of the celebrations, naval vessels will be open to visitors at the ports of Varna and Burgas from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Aug. 8, the Defence Ministry said.

Plovdiv is hosting the U-19 World Rowing Championships

A total of 655 young rowers (364 men and 291 women) from 54 countries will compete at the World Rowing Under-19 Championships in Plovdiv from Aug. 6 to 9. Bulgaria will field 16 athletes in six boats. Admission to the Plovdiv Rowing Canal will be free.

The opening ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Roman Stadium in Plovdiv's city centre. According to the municipality, World Rowing President and International Olympic Committee member Jean-Christophe Rolland will be among the official guests.

The finals and medal ceremonies are scheduled for Aug. 8 and 9 at the Plovdiv Rowing Canal.

Plovdiv is bidding to become the European Capital of Sport 2028. Its application will be assessed by ACES Europe in November 2026.

Yellow heat warnings are in place across 22 regions of Bulgaria

On Wednesday, minimum temperatures will range from 14°C to 22°C. The forecast for Sofia is 14°C. Skies will be mainly sunny.

Cumulus clouds will develop in the afternoon, primarily over mountainous regions, where isolated showers are expected. The lowlands will remain dry and hot. There will be a light to moderate easterly wind.

Maximum temperatures will range from 33 to 38°C. In the capital, it will reach around 33°C.
A yellow warning for dangerous heat has been issued for 22 regions across the country.

Along the Black Sea coast, it will be sunny with a moderate north-easterly wind. Maximum air temperatures will range from 28 to 30°C. The sea temperature is around 25°C. The sea will be calm, reaching a Beaufort scale rating of 2.

In the mountains, it will be mainly sunny with an increase in cumulus cloud cover in the afternoon. There is a possibility of brief showers, particularly in the Rila-Rhodope region. The wind will be moderate and blow from the east-north-east. At 1,200 metres above sea level, the maximum temperature will be around 29°C and at 2,000 metres it will be around 21°C.

On Thursday, it will remain warm and hot. Temperatures will rise further, with maximums ranging between 34 and 39°C.

DB coalition seeks OFAC clarification on alleged "Borissov-Bozhkov" links

The GERB party has issued an official statement in response to a document published by the investigative website BIRD, which claims that the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) accepted as established businessman Vasil Bozhkov's admission that he had paid bribes to former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and former Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov in exchange for favorable treatment of his business, Bulgarian National Radio's Horizont programme reported.

GERB stressed that the published document is a procedural filing rather than a court ruling. In its statement, the party said that "attempts to present individual sentences as definitive truth constitute political propaganda rather than legal analysis."

Earlier in the day, the Democratic Bulgaria coalition announced that it had sent a letter to OFAC seeking clarification. Among its questions are why Vladislav Goranov was sanctioned under the Global Magnitsky Act while Boyko Borissov was not, and whether this reflects the available evidence or "is the result of other considerations."

According to the coalition, the Bulgarian public deserves a full explanation of the case, as it concerns a former prime minister of the country, BTA reported.

Constitutional Court admits petitions against 2026 State Budget for review

Bulgaria's Constitutional Court has admitted for consideration on the merits three petitions challenging the constitutionality of provisions in the 2026 State Budget Act and the 2026 State Social Security Budget Act. The petitions were filed by the GERB-SDS coalition and, separately, in two cases by We Continue the Change (PP) party. The court said in a statement that the decisions to proceed with the cases were adopted unanimously, BTA reported.

According to the petitioners, some of the contested provisions violate the rule of law, the constitutional guarantee of citizens' social rights, and the principles of fiscal stability and legality.

They also argue that the projected budget deficit of 5.7% of GDP is at odds with the Public Finance Act, which does not allow such a deviation unless the extraordinary conditions specified in the law are met.

The man who keeps Bulgaria's memory alive in Hungary

When people think of the Bulgarian diaspora abroad, they often picture the waves of emigration of recent decades. In Hungary, however, one of the country's oldest Bulgarian communities traces its roots back more than a century to the vegetable growers who settled there, bringing with them not only seeds but also their faith, language and traditions. They built churches and schools through their own donations, creating institutions that still serve the community today.

One of the most dedicated guardians of that heritage is Tosho Angelov Donchev. Born in Budapest in 1944 during the Second World War, he has travelled a remarkable path – from a child playing in the courtyard of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church of Sts Cyril and Methodius to a sociologist, bilingual author and former state secretary who headed Hungary's Office for National and Ethnic Minorities.

Throughout his life, Donchev has remained deeply committed to Bulgaria's community in Hungary.

Poland, Italy and Spain drive growth in Bulgaria's city tourism, expert says

Foreign visitors are increasingly choosing Bulgaria for city breaks rather than seaside holidays, tourism expert Bayko Baykov of the Bulgarian Association for Sustainable Tourism told Bulgarian National Radio.

Improved transport links have helped attract more visitors to cultural destinations such as Sofia, Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo and Kazanlak, Baykov said.

He attributed much of the recent growth in city tourism to visitors from Poland, Italy and Spain, travelling both independently and through tour operators.

Interest from more distant markets, including China, Japan, the United States and Canada, remains limited because of the lack of direct air links.

Energy minister: No risk of Kozloduy NPP shutdown due to low Danube levels

There is no risk of Bulgaria's Kozloduy nuclear power plant shutting down because of low water levels in the Danube River, Energy Minister Iva Petrova said during a visit to the facility. Petrova said the plant could continue operating in the coming weeks if current river conditions persist.

Record-low water levels on the Danube, caused by prolonged drought, have raised concerns about a possible energy crisis in the Balkans. Bulgaria's two reactors at Kozloduy continue to operate at planned capacity despite the low river levels.

Since early July, a special task force has been monitoring the situation and implementing contingency measures to address a prolonged decline in the Danube's water level.

Miro presents a new hot single

In the midst of summer, Miro presents his new song "Tvoeto sexy az", which brings the joy and smile appropriate for the season. With this single, the artist opens the door even wider to his upcoming album “Mirotvortsi".

The new song overturns the idea of one of the most used words in pop culture - instead of a sign of an external image, "sexy" is a symbol and metaphor for our inner freedom.

To create the music and lyrics, Miro worked together with his long-time creative collaborators Krum Georgiev and Ana Pesheva. The arrangement is by Krum Georgiev, who is among the authors of some of the biggest hits in Miro's career.

The Bulgarian Danube is still navigable but restricted

The water level of the Danube continues to fall. They are approaching the record lows set at the end of September during the driest years. The sections near Svishtov are the most critical for navigation, Ivelin Zanev, Director of the Executive Agency for the Study and Maintenance of the Danube, told BNR.

"Many barge convoys are waiting to transit the river. In the Bulgarian section, the depth is around 1.6 metres in the Belene and Batina areas, whereas it is at least 1.8 metres everywhere else. Shipping will not be suspended for administrative reasons unless an incident occurs. However, shipowners may decide that transporting their cargo is not cost-effective, " Zanev explained to Asya Pencheva, BNR’s correspondent in Ruse.

The International Danube Commission has announced that the cruise ship VIKING ULLUR, which ran aground nearly a week ago near the village of Gomotartsi, just before Vidin, has now been refloated.

There are no threats from conflicts in both Europe and the Middle East, said President Iliana Iotova during a visit to the archaeological complex of Perperikon. According to the head of state, the cancelled charter tourist flights were due to the fuel situation. "It's about price and supply issues," the president said.

She emphasized that the promotion of the country should not be limited to commercials, but should include telling of stories about Bulgarian cultural and historical landmarks. According to her, Perperikon is a unique archaeological site and deserves much greater international fame, BTA reports.

Deputy PM Pekanov hopes Bulgaria to receive 90-95% of money under RRP

Bulgaria is expected to receive another 109 million euros this week under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Pekanov told bTV. This country has received just over 70% of the funds under the plan. My goal is to reach over 90% - 95%. A lot of delays have accumulated over the years, Pekanov said.

The key for the European Commission was to show whether the new majority has the will for anti-corruption reforms. In just two weeks, both the Law on the Anti-Corruption Commission and a law that was expected regarding the accountability of the Prosecutor General were adopted, which unlocks another 109 million that we will receive this week, Pekanov commented.

Traffic is intense at Kapitan Andreevo border crossing point

There is heavy traffic at the border crossing point “Kalotina” with Serbia at the entrance for cars, as well as at the “Kapitan Andreevo” point at the exit and entrance for cars and trucks to and from Türkiye. Traffic at the border crossings with Greece, North Macedonia and Romania is normal for the season, the Border Police has reported.

Due to the low level of the Danube, the only ferry still operating on the river connecting Bulgaria with Romania is between the cities of Silistra and Călărași. Due to the expected heat wave in the period August 4 to 6, the police will stop the movement of heavy vehicles over 20 tons on the Vidin - Vratsa road, on the “Trakia”, “Maritsa”, “Hemus”, “Struma” and “Evropa” highways between 13:00 and 21:00.

The Daskalovo interchange on the Struma motorway near Pernik will be cleaned for three consecutive nights from August 4 to 7. The work will begin at 9 p.m. on August 4 and will continue until 4 a.m. Traffic will be gradually restricted on the inner and outer lanes, as well as on the connecting lanes of the interchange.

Foreign Ministry says Tehran delayed conversation requested by Sofia for 24 days

A conversation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Abbas Araghchi, was initiated by the Bulgarian side and a proposal to hold it was made on July 6. Due to differences in the programs of the two ministers, it took place on July 30. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to BTA after an inquiry about the information of the Iranian state television IRIB, according to which within 24 hours Bulgaria, UK and Ukraine told Iran that they “will not become part of the war”.

The Foreign Ministry specified that after the conversation on July 30, no other conversation was held. Direct dialogue is a basic instrument of diplomacy and contributes to maintaining open channels of communication. This should not be interpreted as something outside the usual diplomatic practice, the ministry also pointed out.

Valdi Totev celebrates his 75th birthday

There are many Bulgarian musicians who have left a lasting mark and songs beloved by generations of Bulgarians, but one of the names that almost everyone who is a bit tempted by music thinks of is that of composer, singer and pianist Vladimir (Valdi) Totev. Composting – Green PR or real change

A few days ago, the Sofia Municipality announced that it would distribute 4,650 free plastic compost bins with an impressive volume of 740 liters. So far, over 14,000 households in Sofia have already benefited from the program. At first glance, the "Compost at Home" initiative, which is being organized for the 11th time in a row, seems like a well-established environmental tradition in the modern city management. But if we look beneath the surface, the campaign reveals both its enormous potential and the deep systemic defects in Sofia's waste management. Goya prints go on display at Sofia's Kvadrat 500 Gallery

An exhibition featuring 21 prints by Spanish master Francisco Goya (1746 to 1828) from the collection of the National Gallery opens at Kvadrat 500 Gallery in Sofia.

Titled "Francisco Goya: Dreams of a Keen Mind", the exhibition opens at 6:00 p.m. on 4 August and will remain on view until 21 October.

The twenty-one prints from the National Gallery collection follow Goya’s development from his earliest etchings, influenced by Diego Velázquez’s style, to his peak achievements as a social interpreter, remarkable for his sharpness, and a chronicler of dour events and complex human characters. The high artistic level of his four graphic series has left a deep imprint on the history of art.

Bulgaria's Varna will host International Festival of Orthodox Church Music

On 4 and 5 August, the Summer Theatre in the Black Sea city of Varna will host the first edition of the St Mary Portaitissa International Festival of Orthodox Church Music.

The event will bring together some of the most distinguished performers of Orthodox sacred music from Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, North Macedonia, Georgia and Lebanon.

The festival is named Saint Mary Portaitissa in honour of the Most Holy Theotokos, the heavenly patron and protector of Varna. Her Portaitissa ("Keeper of the Gates") icon symbolises spiritual protection, hope and the hospitality with which the city welcomes its guests and participants.

Both concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free, the Varna and Veliki Preslav Holy Metropolis has announced.

Heat warning issued for 20 regions of Bulgaria for Tuesday

On Tuesday, minimum temperatures in Bulgaria will range from 9°C in Smolyan to 21°C in Yambol. In Sofia, the minimum temperature will be around 16°C.

The day will be sunny, with hot conditions developing in the lowlands during the afternoon. There will be temporary increases in cloud cover, mainly over eastern Bulgaria and the mountainous areas, but little to no rainfall is expected. Winds will be light to moderate from the northeast.

Daytime highs will range between 32°C and 38°C, with lower maximum temperatures along the Black Sea coast. In the capital, temperatures will reach around 33°C.

Along the Black Sea coast, the weather will be mostly sunny. Light northeasterly winds will prevail, becoming moderate along the southern coast. Maximum air temperatures will range from 29°C to 32°C. Sea water temperatures are around 25°C, with sea conditions remaining calm at 1 to 2 on the Beaufort scale.

In the mountains, the weather will be sunny, with temporary increases in cloud cover during the afternoon, but little chance of rain. Winds will be light to moderate from the northeast. Maximum temperatures will reach around 28°C at 1,200 metres and 20°C at 2,000 metres.

Wednesday will remain sunny and hot, with occasional increases in cloud cover but only a slight chance of rainfall. Winds will be light, becoming moderate from the northeast along the Black Sea coast during the afternoon.

3D computer vision pioneer joins Bulgaria's INSAIT

Professor Marc Pollefeys, one of the world's leading researchers in robotics and computer vision, is joining the Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT) at Sofia University, the Education Ministry said.

Pollefeys will work with INSAIT researchers on projects in robotics and computer vision, fields regarded as strategically important for artificial intelligence.

His work has contributed to a range of technological advances, including the first autonomous drone guided by computer vision and the augmented reality technology behind Google Maps Live View.

Pollefeys also developed COLMAP, one of the world's most widely used open-source tools for creating accurate 3D models from photographs, and LightGlue, an image-matching technology widely used in computer vision.

Bulgarian fantasy novel wins European debut award

Bulgarian author Vida Delcheva's fantasy novel "Sunbreakers" has won the Chrysalis Award for best debut, presented by the European Science Fiction Society during its annual European science fiction and fantasy convention in Paris.

"Sunbreakers" was Bulgaria's nominee for the award.

Drawing on Bulgarian folklore, the novel follows its characters through encounters with mythical creatures such as karakondzhuls, samodivas and dragons, while exploring themes of duty, friendship and the inner darkness everyone must confront.

Dakota Ditcheva returns to the cage with convincing victory

British MMA fighter of Bulgarian descent Dakota Ditcheva made a successful return to competition, recording the 16th victory of her professional career and maintaining her unbeaten record at 16-0, sportal.bg reported.

Ditcheva defeated Denise Kielholtz by unanimous decision in the co-main event of the Professional Fighters League (PFL) event held at UBS Arena in New York City.

The victory marked her first appearance in the cage after a break of just over a year. In July last year, Ditcheva broke her hand during her bout against Sumiko Inaba, an injury that required surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation.

Although born and raised in Manchester, England, Ditcheva has consistently highlighted her strong connection to Bulgaria. Her father, Ivo Ditchev, is from the town of Samokov, and the fighter often says that her discipline and fighting spirit are part of her Bulgarian heritage.

She enters the cage carrying both the British and Bulgarian flags, while her social media channels frequently feature Bulgaria's natural beauty, everyday life in the country and traditional Bulgarian recipes.

Bulgarian production to be staged at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Bulgaria will be represented at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world's largest performing arts festival. The Hand Theatre from Plovdiv will present its production "Shakespeare X 5" at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2026.

"Our participation is recognition of the journey we have made over the years and an opportunity to present contemporary Bulgarian independent theatre to audiences from around the world. From 7 to 30 August, we will perform 24 shows, every day at 11:30 a.m., at Zoo Venues – Playground 1, one of the Fringe's most prestigious and established performance spaces," the company wrote on Facebook.
