Sofia hosts talks on transport links between Black Sea and Aegean

An international forum on improving transport links between Black Sea and Aegean ports opens in Sofia on Friday, the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry said.

The forum will focus on the role of Bulgaria, Greece and Romania in developing the Vertical Corridor, including upgrades to ports, roads and railways and better cross-border connections. The aim is to make it easier to move goods between southern, central and eastern Europe.

Government and EU officials, diplomats, investors and transport industry representatives are expected to attend. EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas is listed as a speaker on the preliminary programme.

Radio Romania at 98

A decade after WWI, when all the Romanian-speaking provinces belonging to various empires until that time had come under the authority of Bucharest, Romania offered itself the most effective means of communication available at the moment, the only one able to be heard in any region of the entire country that was now completed. On November 1, 1928, the Radiotelephonic Broadcasting Society in Romania - which would later become the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation as we know it today - aired its first programme.

Designed from its early days as a means of information, education and entertainment, the Romanian public radio has broadcast uninterruptedly for 98 years. Of course, it had to editorially adjust itself along the years, paying tribute to the political power, but it always survived the radical regime changes the country saw in this period – from the inter-war democracy to the right-wing dictatorships around the Second World War to the communist dictatorship and to the restored democracy after 1989.

For a long time credited as the most trustworthy and important media institution in Romania, through the great number of its listeners, Radio Romania caters to the entire society, to all generations and tastes. Just as the country’s President, Nicusor Dan, says.

Nicuşor Dan: ”We have a public space which is dominated by polarization, a lot of noise and even disinformation, so the role of a public media institution is to keep the balance, dialogue, real debates and verified information. And this is the mission, the public radio has. I want to thank all the journalists, editors and producers, to all who make these transmissions possible.”

This has been confirmed by Prime Minister Luca Niculescu.

12th autumn edition of Plovdiv Jazz Fest features world-renowned jazz artists

International and Bulgarian jazz musicians will take part in the 12th edition of Plovdiv Jazz Fest. Contemporary improvisational music and European jazz will fill the Boris Hristov House of Culture from 6 to 8 November, the organisers from Blue M announce.

The festival will open with a concert by renowned American pianist and composer Aaron Parks and his trio. Audiences will also be treated to a special project created exclusively for the festival, entitled “100 Years of Miles Davis”, featuring Rosen Zahariev-Roko All Stars. The line-up includes pianist Steve Hamilton, Vasil Hadjigrudev on double bass, drummer Borislav Petrov, and guest musicians Petar Momchev on tenor saxophone and beatbox artist Aleksandar Deyanov-SkilleR.

Plovdiv Jazz Fest will also feature performances by singers Emma Smith and Elina Duni, guitarist Cenk Erdoğan and pianist Shai Maestro, each appearing with their respective bands. A series of accompanying events and jam sessions will further enrich the festival programme.

Bulgarian folk ensembles abroad mark a decade together

The Association of Bulgarian Folklore Ensembles Abroad is marking its tenth anniversary with a celebratory concert in Sofia on 7 November. The concert is a highlight of the fifth workshop for leaders of Bulgarian folklore groups abroad.

“We’ve set ourselves the goal of exploring a different folklore region each year, and this year we’re focusing on the folk traditions of the Shopluka region,” the association’s chair, Radoslava Nedyalkova, told Radio Bulgaria. The association brings together more than 60 performing groups from around the world. Nedyalkova also leads the Nashentsi ensemble in Milan.

She told us that three groups will take the stage at Joy Station on 7 November: the international folklore ensemble Mladost na Megdana, the international dance group Gurbetchii and the combined folk choir Pastra Kitka. They bring together Bulgarian performers from different countries who see their native folklore as both a calling and a source of magic. Working together from a distance, Nedyalkova says, is a challenge.

“They’re based in different countries, so they organise rehearsal camps and get together somewhere in Europe. They go for a weekend and put together the dance we’ll show you in Sofia on 7 November. But enthusiasm really is a powerful force. It can work wonders, and I’m glad our association was able to bring together so many people who put their hearts into this. They’ve found a wonderful way to work together and show that, when it comes down to it, we Bulgarians really do stand together and can create beautiful things together.”

QSL No. 11: 1970 - Construction begins on BNR’s “new” building

In 2026, Radio Bulgaria is confirming radio listeners’ reception reports with a new series of 12 QSL cards. Each card features an image highlighting a particular historical event connected with the history of the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) and its Radio Bulgaria programme, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary. At the beginning of each month, a special feature takes you behind the scenes of these images, revealing some interesting facts about them.

The eleventh QSL card for 2026 is dedicated to the “new” building of the Bulgarian National Radio.

In the late 1960s, a decision was taken to construct a new building to provide more office and technical space for the multi-channel national broadcaster and its numerous employees. The foundation stone of the new home of the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) was laid on 17 August 1970.

Chilly morning with fog, sunshine will break through during the day

On Friday, minimum temperatures in Bulgaria will range from 0° to 5°C, with around 2°C expected in Sofia. Fog or low cloud will form in some low-lying areas in the morning. The day will be predominantly sunny, with patches of high cloud.

Maximum temperatures will range from 9° to 14°C, reaching around 11°C in the capital.

Along the Black Sea coast, the cloud cover will break up and gradually decrease, giving way to mostly sunny conditions. Moderate, temporarily strong north-north-westerly winds will bring in colder air. Maximum air temperatures will range from 7° to 11°C. Sea temperatures will be between 15° and 17°C, while the sea will be rough, with waves reaching force 3 to 4 on the Beaufort scale.

Sunny weather will prevail in the mountains. Light to moderate north-north-westerly winds are expected. The maximum temperature will be around 8°C at an altitude of 1,200 metres and around 1°C at 2,000 metres.

On Saturday, cloud cover will decrease, with sunny weather prevailing across most of the country. Before midday, fog or low stratus cloud will persist in some low-lying areas and valleys. Winds will be light from the north-west, becoming temporarily calm in many areas. Minimum temperatures will drop to between -3° and 2°C, while maximum temperatures will remain largely unchanged, mostly ranging from 9° to 14°C.

Sunny weather will prevail across the Balkans on Friday. Fog or low stratus cloud will occur in some low-lying areas in the morning. Cloudy skies and rain are expected in the southernmost parts of the Peloponnese Peninsula.

Temperatures will reach 16°C in Athens, 11°C in Belgrade and up to 13°C in Bucharest and Istanbul.

Monument to Sofia’s legendary mayor Ivan Ivanov is a step closer to reality

After a 15-year saga, the Sofia Municipal Council has approved a proposal to erect a monument to engineer Ivan Ivanov, Sofia's legendary mayor in the period 1934-1944. The monument is expected to be installed by the end of this year or sometime next year, near Vasil Levski Stadium metro station.

The location is symbolic, as it was here that water from the Rila water pipeline, a project engineered by Ivan Ivanov, first gushed forth 100 years ago.

Higher fuel prices have eroded the purchasing power of 74% of Bulgarians

Around three-quarters of Bulgarian citizens say that rising prices for natural gas, electricity, fuel and other energy resources over the past 12 months have significantly reduced their purchasing power. The figure for Bulgaria stands at 74%, compared with an average of 60% across the European Union, according to the findings of the eighth edition of the European Investment Bank’s Climate Survey.

For 23% of Bulgarians, the impact on their purchasing power has been very severe. This is slightly above the EU average of 20%, placing Bulgaria among the countries with the highest figures on this measure as well.

To cope with rising prices, 50% of Bulgarian respondents have cut their everyday spending on food or healthcare. Another 26% have reduced their heating expenditure, while 20% have taken on debt, sought financial assistance or delayed paying their energy bills.

According to the survey, 69% of Bulgarians believe that the energy transition is urgently needed. As its most anticipated benefits, 77% cite lower energy prices, 74% reduced dependence on imports of oil and natural gas, and 66% a slowdown in climate change.

Government’s decision to present draft budget at UNWE draws sharp criticism

Bulgaria's Prime Minister Rumen Radev is due to present the vision and policies underpinning next year’s draft state budget tomorrow in the main auditorium of the University of National and World Economy (UNWE), according to an announcement by the Ministry of Finance. Each minister will publicly outline and defend the key priorities in their respective areas of responsibility.

European Commission to review Bulgaria's excessive deficit procedure in November

The opposition has reacted sharply to the decision to unveil the state’s financial plan at an academic institution rather than at the Council of Ministers or the National Assembly.

Democratic Bulgaria has given the government a 24-hour ultimatum to disclose whether talks have been held on redirecting funds from the second pension pillar to the first. “For us, this is a budget that leads nowhere, and we can hardly wait to see it so that we can dissect it, piece by piece,” said Ivaylo Mirchev.

“Instead of taking political responsibility, they are shifting it onto the academic leadership of UNWE when explaining how people will become poorer next year, how taxes will rise and how doing business will become more difficult,” commented Nikolay Denkov of "We Continue the Change".

Kostadin Kostadinov of Vazrazhdane party described the decision to present the budget at UNWE as “disrespect for Parliament”, arguing that “we are neither a presidential republic, nor a monarchy, nor a dictatorship, but a parliamentary republic”. He confirmed that the governing parties had considered changes to the second pension pillar but had abandoned the idea following the threat of protests. In principle, Vazrazhdane supports the idea of limiting the funds managed by private pension funds.

“Against the backdrop of the expected budget presentation, we have heard more and more lies in recent weeks, some of which have also been disproved by documents from the European Commission. We can see that what is being presented as a social budget is actually hitting the most vulnerable members of society,” said Atidzhe Alieva of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), describing the upcoming event at UNWE as “a disregard for parliamentarism”.

Three aircraft make emergency landings in Bulgaria following bomb threats

Bomb threats sent by email were received concerning three Ryanair flights from European cities to Bulgaria. In response to the reports of a potential threat, three MiG-29 fighter jets on combat air patrol at Bulgaria's Graf Ignatievo Air Base took off at 10:11 a.m. with orders to intercept and escort the civilian aircraft.

Two of the planes, arriving from Copenhagen and Madrid, have already landed at Sofia’s Vasil Levski Airport. The third, which departed from London, landed in Plovdiv, airport executive director Krasimir Peshev said. The aircraft had originally been scheduled to land at Sofia Airport.

So far, there has been no information about any dangerous objects being found or any actual threat on board any of the aircraft. The authorities are carrying out inspections, while the security services are working to identify the source of the threats. The investigation is ongoing, and security measures at the affected airports have been stepped up.

The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) recalls that three days ago, a Wizz Air flight from London to Sofia was diverted to Budapest after a bomb threat was reported while the aircraft was in flight.

57.7% of employees in Bulgaria earn less than needed to cover living costs

The net monthly income required to cover living costs in Bulgaria is €842 for a single working person living alone. A household with two working parents and a child under the age of 14 needs €1,516.

These are the findings of a third-quarter survey conducted by the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB). The results were presented by Violeta Ivanova, head of CITUB’s Institute for Social and Trade Union Research.

More than half of all employees, or 57.7%, earn less than the amount needed to cover their living costs. The survey findings point to mounting price pressures on both households and businesses.

Almost 40% of a working person’s income in Bulgaria is spent on food alone. Food prices have risen by 5.3% year on year.

The trade union says it is calling for an average annual wage increase of at least 10% in the draft 2027 state budget, both in the public sector and across the wider economy.

Supergroup Frontmen to play first-ever concert in Vienna

The supergroup Frontmen is preparing for its first concert in Vienna. On November 6, Stenli, Svilen Noev, Ersin Mustafov and Ivan Velkov - the lead singers of some of Bulgaria's best-loved rock and alternative bands - will take the stage at U4, Schönbrunner Str. 222/228, performing hits from their respective bands: Tangra, Oстава, P.I.F. and JEREMY?.

U4 is a legendary venue where Nirvana have performed. Ostava themselves have played there twice. According to Svilen Noev, concerts by Bulgarian artists in Western Europe have become less popular in recent years, as travelling to Bulgaria to attend concerts has become much easier than it used to be. The deal is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027, pending the necessary regulatory approvals in the US and approval from the company's shareholders, said Svilen Rangelov, co-founder and president of the company.

Bulgarian company produces civil drones together with Kawasaki Motors

Founded in 2014, Dronamics develops new platforms for large unmanned aircraft designed for applications in cargo transport, defence and aerial mapping. The planned Nasdaq listing is expected to increase the company's valuation from USD 400 million to USD 500 million.

Film with Bulgarian participation wins grand prix at Tokyo film festival

The film Sister Brother Manhole Cover directed by Milcho Manchevski won the top prize at this year's Tokyo International Film Festival, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reported.

The production received the Tokyo Grand Prix. The film tells the story of a brother and sister living in post-communist North Macedonia who make a living by stealing bronze busts and manhole covers, until a sudden injury forces them into contact with the criminal underworld.

Sister Brother Manhole Cover had its world premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival. The film is a co-production between North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Albania, Italy and the United Kingdom. Bulgaria is represented by producer Galina Toneva of Gala Film.

Traffic normal at all border crossings

Traffic is normal at all border crossings and checkpoints with neighbouring countries, the Border Police reported. Traffic on the Hemus Motorway towards Varna near Enevo is restricted due to road sign replacement works. Traffic is being regulated by police patrol cars. Repairs to the Topli Dol tunnel are also ongoing, with traffic diverted to a single tunnel tube, according to traffic.api.bg/road-status/.

One person has died and 11 have been injured in 10 serious road accidents across the country over the past 24 hours, Traffic Police reported. Since the beginning of the month, there have been 62 serious road accidents, resulting in four fatalities and 78 injuries.

Bulgarian children from across Europe gather for a festival in Sofia

Young Bulgarians from different parts of Europe are arriving in Sofia to join their peers from Bulgaria in a festival and competition showcasing instrumental, vocal and dance arts. The event is organized by the Tsvyatko Blagoev Foundation. The organizers say they hope that “Folk Rhythms Under Our Native Roof” will be more than just a competition – above all, an opportunity to meet, have fun and make new friends.

The festival will take place on November 7 and 8 at the Iskar House of Culture in Sofia, with the support of the State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad, the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Sofia Regional Education Department, and the Union of Bulgarian Musicians and Dancers. The event is also receiving active support from the Prof. Ivan Shishmanov Bulgarian-Austrian School in Vienna; the Parallel 43 Cultural Association, which established and runs the Asen and Iliya Peykov Bulgarian School in Rome; and two Sofia-based educational institutions, 128 Albert Einstein High School and Meridian 22.

The competition programme will feature groups from schools, community cultural centres and even kindergartens across Sofia. Students from Vienna, Rome and Bucharest will also be taking part, while Bulgarian children from Cyprus, the UK, Belgium, Spain and other countries are expected to join them.

One-off windfall tax to also apply to smaller retailers

The excess profits of banks, insurance companies, telecommunications companies, quick-loan providers, currency exchange offices, and retail chains will be subject to a one-off 33% tax next year, the government has decided.

Businesses will be able to save 30% of the tax due if they retain the funds in Bulgaria for investment purposes or to build up financial reserves, according to the government press service.

Bulgaria plans one-off windfall profits tax for 2027

The excess profits tax will also apply to all food retailers with sales revenue exceeding EUR 5 million in 2026. This threshold is relatively low and will cover almost all regional retail chains operating between three and five supermarkets, as well as larger standalone grocery stores in medium-sized Bulgarian cities.

The VAT registration threshold will also be gradually increased to EUR 60,000 in 2027, EUR 70,000 in 2028, and EUR 75,000 in 2029.

Rain eases across Bulgaria as sunshine returns to some areas

On Thursday, the lowest temperatures will range from 3°C to 8°C, around 7°C in Sofia.

During the day, cloud cover will break up, with mostly sunny conditions expected in Eastern Bulgaria. Light rain showers are expected in the mountainous areas of Western Bulgaria. Winds will be light, becoming moderate in Eastern Bulgaria, from the north-northwest and bringing in colder air. Maximum temperatures will range from 7°C to 12°C , around 9°C in the capital city.

Skies will be partly cloudy along the Black Sea coast. Daytime highs will range from 10°C to 13°C. The seawater temperature is 16°C-17°C. Sea state 3 on the Beaufort scale.

It will be mostly cloudy in the mountains. Rain is expected mainly in the mountain ranges of Western Bulgaria, with snow at higher elevations. There will be moderate to strong north-northeasterly winds.

The maximum temperature at an altitude of 1,200 metres will be around 6°C, at 2,000 metres around 1°C.

On Friday, cloud cover will break up and gradually decrease. In the morning, visibility will be reduced in some lowland areas and valleys. Minimum temperatures will drop, ranging from -1°C to 4°C on Friday, while maximum temperatures will range from 9°C to 14°C.

Tanker carrying sunflower oil adrift off Bulgaria after towline breaks

A tanker believed to be carrying around 11,000 tonnes of sunflower oil is drifting off Shabla on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast after its towline broke, the transport ministry said.

The Mentor was being towed from the Romanian port of Constanța by the tug Ramazan Bey when the line broke. The tug reported the incident and has been instructed by vessel traffic control services to remain near the tanker. Its crew remains in contact with the authorities.

The ministry said contact had been established with the tanker’s owner.

Karlos Nasar wins fourth world title and sets three world records

No seawater pollution linked to drone-hit ships, authorities say

No seawater pollution has been linked to the incidents involving ships, the Black Sea Basin Directorate in Varna said on its website.

Seawater samples were collected near Cape Kaliakra and Byala on 23 October. Tests found nitrate nitrogen levels slightly above the permitted limit near Byala, but the elevated concentration could not be linked to the ship incidents. Results for all other parameters tested were within normal limits.

23 Bulgarians take part in record-breaking New York City Marathon

The 55th New York City Marathon, one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events and part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors series, took place on 1 November. This year’s race became the first marathon in history with more than 60,000 finishers from 153 countries.

Bulgaria was also well represented, the Bulgarian Consulate General in New York said on Facebook, with 23 runners registered as representing the country.

“Our heartfelt congratulations to all the Bulgarians who took on the challenge of running 42.195 km through the streets of New York! Among them are much-loved musicians from Bulgarian Concert Evenings in New York — pianist Lora Tchekoratova and violinist Georgi Valtchev,” the diplomats wrote.

On 30 October, two days before the marathon, the traditional Parade of Nations took place in Central Park. Thousands of participants from around the world carried their national flags in a celebration of sport, cultural diversity and friendship. Ivan Dinev, a former pupil of Hristo Botev School in New York, had the honour of carrying the Bulgarian flag.

“Congratulations on representing our country with distinction!” the Consulate General wrote.

Radio Bulgaria’s Ivo Ivanov honoured for his mastery of the Bulgarian language

Radio Bulgaria journalist Ivo Ivanov, who is also a scriptwriter for Bulgarian National Television’s flagship programme Tourism BG and the creator of its series The Altars of Bulgaria and The Home of Faith, has received the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences’ prestigious award “For Correct and Rich Bulgarian Speech in Journalism”. It was presented at a formal academy gathering marking National Awakeners Day, celebrated on 1 November.

Parliament approves Bulgarian language bill at first reading

The National Assembly approved the Bulgarian Language Bill, submitted by the Vazrazhdane party, at first reading. It was unanimously passed with 153 votes in favour, while the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) did not take part in the vote. The deadline for submitting proposals between the first and second readings was extended to three weeks to allow for further refinement of the bill's provisions.

The bill provides for the establishment of an Advisory Council on the Bulgarian Language under the Council of Ministers, with expert and advisory functions. It will coordinate language policy, support efforts to preserve and develop the language, and report annually on the state of the linguistic environment. The Council will include representatives from academic and educational institutions. Similar legislation exists in countries such as France, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland, the bill's sponsors said.

Bulgarian elected President of World Construction Association for the first time

Lubomir Katchamakov, Chairman of the Bulgarian Construction Chamber, has been elected President of the World Construction Association (CICA). For the first time, a Bulgarian will head the organisation, which represents an industry employing 180 million people and generating annual turnover of more than $7 trillion.

Kachamakov’s election was unanimous. His nomination received the support of all delegates at the organisation’s 79th General Assembly, currently taking place in Paris, France, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reports.

His term of office will run for two years. “Bulgaria is taking its seat at the table of the truly major players and will have first-hand access to information, as well as good and bad practices in the construction industry,” Kachamakov told BTA.

The World Construction Association was established in 1974 in Tokyo, Japan.

Spanish-French film La Bola Negra wins top award at Cinelibri Festival in Sofia

The Spanish-French dramatic epic La Bola Negra (The Black Ball) has won the Best Feature Film award at the 12th edition of the Cinelibri Film and Literature Festival in Sofia. The winner was selected by an international jury chaired by Jim Sheridan, with Maria Jurado, Jakob Jønia and Teodora Markova as members, and Clive Russell participating remotely.

In their citation, the jury described The Black Ball, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, as a bold, visually stunning and entertaining story that blends fiction and reality while exploring the complexities of collective and individual trauma.

The award statuette was presented by Petar Todorov, Executive Director of the Bulgarian National Film Centre, to Eduardo Corchero, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Spain.

IME proposes cutting government spending to 38% of GDP

The Institute for Market Economics (IME) has presented its Alternative State Budget 2027, developed in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation. The analysis highlights the prospect of Bulgaria recording a full decade of budget deficits, with public debt having already exceeded 30% of the GDP. It could reach 40-45% by 2035, while interest payments are expected to rise to €1.8 billion by 2028.

The IME recommends ensuring fiscal stability while keeping current tax rates unchanged. Its proposals include bringing public spending back down to 38% of GDP, reducing the budget deficit and keeping the public debt-to-GDP ratio at 30%. It also recommends that public sector employees should account for no more than 20% of the country's total workforce, while government spending on personnel should be capped at 10% of GDP, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reports.

The analysis identifies several major external risks to the Bulgarian economy: weak economic growth among the country's key trading partners; an anticipated contraction in the public sector; institutional and fiscal pressure on businesses, particularly foreign-owned and large companies, including proposals for a windfall tax; excessive price controls involving intervention in market relations; and attempts to access private pension funds.

The IME proposes breaking out of the cycle of budget deficits by ensuring fiscal stability, implementing reforms and stimulating economic growth through the mobilisation of private capital and privatisation procedures.

Will the “Bulgarian Hollywood” continue to work its cinematic magic?

Until recently, global stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Ryan Reynolds were filming Hollywood blockbusters there. Today, however, the atmosphere is tense, and the drama has nothing to do with a film script. Nu Boyana Film Studios, nestled at the foot of Vitosha Mountain near Sofia and covering an area of 30.2 hectares, is facing its most decisive moment in the past two decades.

On 17 November, a 20-year restriction on the disposal of the properties owned by Nu Boyana Film will expire. The end of this legal restriction has triggered a wave of concern. In September, representatives of the film community and the independent cultural sector staged protests outside the film studios and the Ministry of Culture. The key question within the industry is whether Boyana Film Studios will remain a home for cinema or whether this highly desirable plot of land will become part of the construction boom in the Bulgarian capital.

The State Gazette has published the government decree setting the national minimum monthly wage at €660 as of 1 January 2027, for a full working month based on an eight-hour working day and a five-day working week.

The minimum hourly rate will be €3.98.

The government adopted the decree on 29 October. It was published in the Council of Ministers’ legal information system and will enter into force on 1 January 2027.

On 23 October, the National Council for Tripartite Cooperation failed to reach consensus on the draft government decree setting the new minimum wage for 2027. Employers’ organisations supported the government’s proposed figure of €660, while trade unions opposed it, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) recalls.

Bulgaria will ease visa procedures for Turkish tourists by increasing the number of consular staff and introducing a new electronic appointment booking system. This was announced by Tourism Minister Ilin Dimitrov following a meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Mehmet Ersoy, on the sidelines of the World Travel Market (WTM) 2026 international tourism exhibition in London, the Ministry of Tourism’s press office reported.

The new electronic appointment booking system is to be tested shortly. It is expected to make the process easier and more predictable, the ministry said.

“When someone wants to spend a weekend or a holiday in Bulgaria, access to a visa should not be a reason for them to choose another destination,” Dimitrov said. He described the measures as a genuine reform addressing an issue that the tourism sector has been raising for years.

Nearly 192,000 Turkish tourists were registered in Bulgaria between January and August 2026, while the total number of visits to the country by Turkish citizens stood at around 746,000, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reports.

Government denies plans to divert private pension contributions to state system

Bulgaria's Ministry of Finance has denied reports of an upcoming reform of the second pillar of the pension system, according to a statement issued by the ministry to the media, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reports.

“The ministry continues its efforts to stabilise public finances against the backdrop of what it describes as an inherited excessive deficit and weakened fiscal discipline,” the statement reads. The ministry added that the draft state budget is due to be officially presented on 6 November.

Earlier, the opposition party "We Continue the Change" said it would call for protests if the government proposed transferring part of the contributions to the second pension pillar to the state-run National Social Security Institute. According to the opposition, Bulgaria put forward this measure to the European Commission just over 10 days ago.

Plamen Dimitrov, president of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB), commented that now was the time to improve the second pension pillar, not dismantle it. Taking out part of the funds and redirecting them to the state social security system would be detrimental to all working people, he said, describing the proposal as unacceptable.

Sofia hosts forum on migrant workers, decent work and belonging

An international conference entitled “Europe on the Move: Labour Migrants or Mobile Workers? What Does It Mean to Have Decent Work and to Belong?” will take place on 4 and 5 November 2026 at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences’ main building in Sofia, the academy announced on its website. The organisers are the academy’s Institute for Population and Human Studies and the Bulgarian Red Cross.

Millions of people work far from home: Bulgarians in other European countries and foreign nationals in Bulgaria. The conference asks what they need to secure decent working conditions, equal rights and a meaningful place in the society in which they live.

Participants include representatives of state institutions, international organisations, NGOs and universities from Bulgaria, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Ukraine, as well as employers.

Sociologist Parvan Simeonov looks beyond numbers in Bulgaria’s presidential vote

Iliana Iotova is Bulgaria’s first woman president, democratically elected to serve as head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces. This provides a starting point for our analysis of the presidential election on 1 November 2026 with sociologist Parvan Simeonov of the Myara polling agency, BNR’s partner in covering the vote.

Iotova will formally begin her elected term in January 2027. Until then, she will continue to serve as president, completing Rumen Radev’s term. The Bulgarian research vessel Saints Cyril and Methodius will depart from Varna’s passenger terminal on 4 November on its fifth mission to Livingston Island, Antarctica.

The 35th Bulgarian Antarctic expedition will focus on carrying out 18 scientific projects led by Bulgarian teams. This year’s expedition also includes researchers from Brazil, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, Colombia, China, the United Arab Emirates, Portugal, Romania, the United States and Uruguay.

Rain to ease across Bulgaria, clearing most areas by Wednesday evening

Wednesday will be cloudy, with rain lingering through much of the day in eastern Bulgaria and some mountain areas. Heavy downpours are possible before noon, but the rain will ease later and stop almost everywhere by evening. Morning temperatures will range from 5°C to 10°C, with 12–14°C along the Black Sea coast and around 5°C in Sofia. Afternoon highs will be between 6°C and 11°C, reaching 8–13°C in the southeast and along the coast. Sofia can expect a high of around 8°C. Winds will be generally light, but eastern areas will see moderate to strong north-northeasterlies, easing towards evening.

Along the Black Sea coast, expect cloudy skies and rain. Yellow warnings for heavy rainfall cover the northern coast, with orange warnings in the south until noon. Coastal highs will range from 12°C to 14°C. The sea temperature will be 16–17°C, with sea conditions above state 3.

In the mountains, rain will persist mainly across the eastern ranges and parts of Rila and Pirin, falling as snow at higher elevations. Moderate to strong north-northeasterly winds will add to the chill. Highs will be around 6°C at 1,200 metres and 0°C at 2,000 metres.

Thursday will remain mostly cloudy, with patchy light rain in western Bulgaria. Winds will turn northwesterly, remaining northerly but easing in the east. Morning lows will range from 4°C to 9°C, followed by afternoon highs of 7–12°C.

Bulgaria seeks to become a Stryker vehicle maintenance hub

The first assembled Stryker combat vehicles for the Bulgarian Land Forces were presented at a ceremony held at the TEREM military plant. Training for the driver-mechanics has been underway for more than four months.

Speaking to journalists in Veliko Tarnovo, Minister of Defence Dimitar Stoyanov announced that intensive efforts are being made to establish Bulgaria as a hub for servicing Stryker vehicles. He recalled that such vehicles are also in service in the Republic of North Macedonia and Ukraine. It was also announced that phased deliveries of Dragoon infantry fighting vehicles will begin next year, with a total of 90 vehicles planned.

Georgi Gospodinov wins another international award for Death and the Gardener

Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov and his Swedish translator Hanna Sandborgh have won a Swedish international literary award for his novel Death and the Gardener, the author said on Facebook. “This morning, every Swedish newspaper without exception is reporting that a Bulgarian book has won Stockholm’s grand prize,” Gospodinov wrote.

The award ceremony will take place in Stockholm on 19 January.

Gospodinov became the first Bulgarian to win the International Booker Prize with his novel Time Shelter.

UPDATED: Sofia-bound planes from Bergamo and Dublin searched after threats

Transport Minister Georgi Peev said threats had been received today concerning two flights to Sofia, from Bergamo and Dublin. Both aircraft were searched and nothing suspicious was found. The threats were received by email, Interior Ministry Secretary General Lyubomir Nikolov said, BNR’s Horizont programme reports.

Commenting on yesterday’s bomb threat, Nikolov said efforts to identify the sender were continuing. “The unfortunate thing is that they have started targeting certain airlines, forcing aircraft to change course and requiring the necessary measures to be taken,” Nikolov said, as quoted by BTA.

Yesterday, a Wizz Air flight from London Luton to Sofia was diverted to Budapest after a bomb threat was received during the flight. Following checks, the aircraft continued to Sofia.

Bulgaria’s annual inflation rises to 6.1% in October

Annual inflation in Bulgaria rose to 6.1% in October, up from 5.7% in September, the National Statistical Institute said, BTA reports.

“The impact of the energy shock may prove more persistent than expected. Its indirect and second-round effects therefore need to be monitored particularly closely. We should not wait for them to materialise fully before assessing whether further action is needed,” Bulgarian National Bank Governor Dimitar Radev told the international financial forum OMFIF, taking place in Sofia.

Radev added that fiscal policy was particularly important in a challenging economic environment. Changes to the rules governing business could undermine confidence and constrain investment and financing, the central bank governor stressed.

His remarks follow the government’s proposal for a one-off 33% tax on so-called excess profits in 2027, including those of banks.

The Bulgarian state proposes subsidies for key international air routes

The Bulgarian state will subsidise airfares if an airline operates routes that are loss-making but considered important to the country. This is envisaged in a draft ordinance drawn up by the Ministry of Transport, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reports.

Bulgaria has not previously provided this type of support for air transport, although it is practised in many European countries. The tenders are organised at European level and are open to airlines from other countries as well.

Four conditions must be met simultaneously for a subsidy to be granted. First, transport needs must be impossible to meet under reasonable market conditions. Second, the measure must ensure a minimum level of connectivity for the region concerned. Third, the public service obligation must be proportionate to the objective pursued. Fourth, the objective must not be achievable through other appropriate means.

The amount of the subsidy must not exceed the net costs incurred.

US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State David Baker visits Bulgaria

Bulgaria's Prime Minister Rumen Radev and David Baker, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European Security and Political Affairs, discussed strategic cooperation between Bulgaria and the United States in the fields of economy and investment, advanced technologies and energy, as well as defence partnership and the security environment in the Black Sea region. This was announced by the press service of the Council of Ministers.

The talks also highlighted the strategic importance of the Middle Corridor for Europe’s transport, energy and digital connectivity.

Traffic is moving normally at the country’s border checkpoints and crossing points, the Border Police reported. Temporary traffic arrangements remain in place at the Ruse-Giurgiu border crossing due to construction work on the Danube Bridge near Ruse.

Traffic for passenger cars on the Yundola-Yakoruda road has been restored. However, due to a landslide and the collapse of a retaining wall, vehicles weighing more than 12 tonnes are prohibited from using the road. The speed limit on the 36-kilometre stretch beyond Avramovo railway station towards Eleshnitsa village has been reduced to 50 km/h.

Bad weather is expected to delay repairs to a three-kilometre section of the road through the Vladaya Pass by several days beyond 20 November, the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works has announced. Adverse weather conditions are hampering construction work and making an extension of the deadline necessary.

Two people have been killed and 39 injured in 30 serious road traffic accidents across the country over the past 24 hours, the Traffic Police reported.

Since the beginning of November, three people have lost their lives and 55 have been injured in 40 serious road accidents.

Since the start of 2026, Bulgaria has recorded 5,813 serious road traffic accidents, claiming 416 lives and leaving 7,205 people injured. Compared with the same period in 2025, the number of road fatalities has increased by 41.

Budget deficit widens to €5.2 billion in the first ten months of the year

By the end of October, Bulgaria’s budget deficit is expected to reach €5.2 billion, or 4% of projected GDP. This forecast was announced by the Ministry of Finance on the basis of preliminary data and estimates, BTA reports.

In just one month, the budget deficit has risen from 2.8% to 4%, according to revenue and expenditure figures for the end of October. The ministry attributes the widening deficit primarily to an acceleration in capital expenditure and transfers. In October alone, these exceeded €1.1 billion.

The ministry specifically cites several factors: “The late adoption of the 2026 state budget, the end of the construction season, payments to contractors for the delivery of military equipment, and the completion of projects under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan have concentrated a substantial share of capital expenditure and transfers in the final quarter of the year.”

For the year as a whole, the 2026 state budget envisages a deficit of 5.7%, or approximately €7.2 billion. This is the reason the European Commission placed Bulgaria under an excessive deficit procedure.

Book on Bulgarian and Greek refugees to be presented in Yambol

Professor Ivan Kanev’s book Bulgarians from Thrace and Greeks from the Aegean – Refugees in Bulgaria will be presented in Yambol on 3 November at a meeting with the author. The event begins at 5 p.m. at the House of Science and Technology, BTA reported, citing the organisers from the local Thracian association, Trakia.

The book traces three waves of migration: Bulgarians fleeing Ottoman Thrace in 1913; Bulgarians leaving Western Thrace, mainly in 1924; and Greeks from the Aegean who, over the centuries, settled along the Black Sea coast and in towns in southern Bulgaria along the Maritsa, Arda and Tundzha rivers and their tributaries. Professor Kanev draws on material from Bulgaria’s Central State Archives for his research.
