The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) exercises strict controls on products of animal and plant origin from third countries. No heavy metals or radioactivity were found in them, BFSA said. The position is on the occasion of a statement to BNR-Varna by the chairman of the Association for Industrial Poultry Farming Daniel Bozhankov who said that: ''Products that are not of very clear origin enter Bulgaria. Eggs and meat enter from Ukraine, only as an import from Romania or Poland. Then they go to some of our cutting plants or packing facilities and reach the market as Bulgarian products. This is a very serious problem for the sector as we have no traceability of the goods themselves and thus we deceive the consumers about what they actually buy.''
The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency stresses that the origin of the meat from all types of animals must be indicated on the label. The place where the animal was reared and the place of production shall be indicated on the label. The label must contain the identification mark of the business operator that carried out the last processing. This makes re-labeling of products coming from third countries unacceptable.
