At the end of July, Turkiye sent a diplomatic cable to Bulgaria requesting additional water quantities from the Maritsa River. There is no regulated runoff on the river. The situation in Bulgaria is also extremely worrying due to climate changes and persistent drought. We refused to provide Turkiye with additional water quantities, said caretaker Minister of Environment and Water Petar Dimitrov, reported BTA. Petar Dimitrov was heard on the matter in the National Assembly Committee on Environment and Water.
Asked whether water is being redirected to Greece, Minister Dimitrov explained that under the reparation agreement from 1964, Bulgaria had the obligation to provide water quantities from the Arda River between May and September for a period of 60 years. This agreement expired on July 9 this year, said Petar Dimitrov.
