Inflation has led to higher turnover and a demand for new 100 and 50-Leva bills

During the first 9 months of 2024, the Bulgarian National Bank has put an additional 11 million 100-Leva banknotes into circulation in the country.
At the beginning of the year, there were more than 131 million 100-Leva bills in circulation whereas by the end of September their number was over 142 million. The number of 50-Leva bills in circulation has also gone up – from 244 million to 251 million over the same period. However, the number of 20-Leva bills in circulation has gone down significantly – by 9 million. Almost 5 million of the 10-Leva bills are out of circulation. Though on a smaller scale, the number of 5-Leva bills has gone up by 2 million.
When the 100-Leva bills were first put into circulation in 2003 they numbered just 806,000, whereas 21 years later their number if over 142 million.
