Changes to Bulgaria's Road Traffic Law published, take effect in a month

Amendments to Bulgaria’s Road Traffic Law, published in today's issue of the State Gazette, will come into force in one month.

From 5 September, toll cameras will transmit average speed data to the Ministry of the Interior, bTV reports. Drivers exceeding the speed limit will receive electronic fines. Drivers exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 km/h outside built-up areas will be fined 600 leva (300 euros) and have their driving licence suspended for two months.

The maximum motorway speed remains at 140 km/h, while the limit on express roads is 120 km/h. In urban areas, the speed limit is 50 km/h, while on intercity and rural roads, the existing limit of 90 km/h will remain. Zones with a 30 km/h speed limit will be introduced in residential areas and near schools, kindergartens and playgrounds. The penalty for running a red light or failing to stop at pedestrian crossings has increased to 150 leva. Vehicles will be denied a technical inspection if the owner has unpaid fines.

Electric scooters will be permitted to travel at up to 25 km/h during daylight hours only, in cycle lanes or at the side of the road, and riders must wear helmets.
