Six European countries help Bulgaria fight fires

Last week, Greece, Spain, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Albania activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to help them deal with forest fires, many of which are occurring simultaneously across Europe, the European Commission announced. In Bulgaria, six countries - the Czech Republic, Slovakia, France, Hungary, Romania and Sweden - have mobilised aircraft through the mechanism, including rescEU helicopters stationed in Sweden.

On 12 August, Interior Minister Daniel Mitov announced that over 1,000 fires had been registered in the country in the past week alone, with over 1/3 of them being arson.
