A scheme for tax crimes through the use of documents with false content about carrying out fictitious deals with fuel exempt from excise duty has been busted. The avoided payment of excise duty is over 4.8 million EUR. The company, which was registered as a fuel tax warehouse, took advantage of a ratified international agreement between Bulgaria and the US, allowing for excise duty exemption for goods for the Novo Selo field training ground, which is a US base.
The company declared that it had the right to be exempt from excise duty through false documents, some of which claimed to be written by US generals who are not active, do not work in Bulgaria and have never worked in our country. At the moment, no involvement of US military or other employees in the scheme has been established, the Plovdiv District Prosecutor's Office reported. The scheme has been operating since at least 2019. The information comes from Bulgarian National Radio reporter Silvia Velikova.
