All Souls' Day (Zadushnitsa in Bulgarian) is an important day for many Christians. On this day, we remember deceased relatives and loved ones. The first of the three All Souls' Days of the year, also known as the Great or All Souls' Day, falls on the Saturday before Lent on Sunday, February 22.
The day is dedicated to thoughts about the deceased and prayers for their souls. The very name "Zadushnitsa" means a day when we pray "for the soul" of the deceased.
On All Souls' Day, the service is for the dead, after which a memorial service is held with a common table with boiled wheat, bread or pita bread, wine, fruits, sweets or candies.
