With 118 votes "in favor", the Bulgarian National Assembly elected GERB-SDS nominee Simeon Dyankov as Chairman of the Fiscal Council. The following members of the council were elected: Desislava Kalcheva - GERB-SDS, Atanas Atanasov - ITN, Bogomil Manov - BSP-United left, Erdoan Ahmedov - DPS-DPS, Lyubomir Datsov - GERB-SDS.
Who is Simeon Dyankov? In 1995, he became a Master of Economics at the University of Michigan, and in 1997 he was awarded the degree of "Doctor of Economics" from the same university. He was Minister of Finance of Bulgaria between 2009 and 2013 during the first government of Boyko Borisov, and was then elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Dyankov gained popularity by describing the 2010 state budget as a "small, meatless pizza." "It's meatless, yes, because it's small and we don't have much money for decorations, but at least it's there, and what's most important for my colleagues, they will eat their pieces in the exact size set out in the budget," Dyankov said at the time in his capacity as Finance Minister.
The main task of the Fiscal Council is to carry out independent monitoring and analysis of the budget framework with a view to maintaining sustainable public finances and compliance with fiscal rules.
