Bulgaria ranks 70th in the latest Reporters Without Borders’ World Press Freedom Index. It remains at the bottom of the EU, as only Cyprus and Greece are behind it. Media freedom is fragile. The few independent media outlets in Bulgaria are under pressure, the organization’s report reads.
In 2024, Bulgaria climbed 12 places to 59th in the annual press freedom ranking, but has now fallen 11 places.
Media owners “always” or “often” limit the editorial independence of their publications and many of them owe their survival to conditional funding from individuals close to political or business circles, the analysis for Bulgaria shows.
The annual ranking was announced the day before World Press Freedom Day, which is celebrated on May 3.
