In a statement posted on the Facebook page of the Council of Ministers, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said that President Rumen Radev's proposal for a national referendum on the euro was causing confusion in the European institutions.
"I consider it categorically unacceptable for President Rumen Radev to outline his future political project through his Velichie (party - ed.) in an electoral race with Vazrazhdane and at the expense of the future of Bulgarian citizens," the statement said. According to Zhelyazkov, the Bulgarian government is making and will continue to make every effort to ensure the country's accession to the eurozone, as this will guarantee increased economic competitiveness, stabilisation of public finances, lower interest rates, investor confidence and many other benefits. According to Zhelyazkov, "the most important benefit is that there will be no alternative to democracy".
As Prime Minister, Zhelyazkov calls on MPs who are convinced that Bulgaria must complete its path to full integration into the European Union by joining the eurozone to prove it with their votes in the National Assembly.
