May 24 has been declared Bulgarian Cultural Heritage Day in Seattle, according to BNR correspondent Elena Tsaneva in Chicago.
'May 24 marks the creation of the Cyrillic alphabet, which became a cornerstone of literacy and communication for millions of people in Eastern Europe and Central Asia,' said Mayor Bruce Harrell in a statement of proclamation. The document highlights the contributions of the Bulgarian community to the city's history, culture and economy, and celebrates its achievements.
To celebrate, two folk groups, "Hopa Trop", led by Daniela Makedonska, and "Seattle Cheta", led by Daniela Nyberg, will perform at the Rose Festival in Vancouver.
