The majority of Bulgarians (83%) consider reading books to be important. However, according to a survey conducted by the sociological agency Trend on behalf of 24 Hours between 12 and 18 May 2025, four out of ten people (43%) admit that they have not read a single book in the last year.
The main reason given by those who have not read any books in the last year is lack of interest (43%), followed by lack of time (34%). Lack of interest is particularly prevalent among the youngest respondents, those under 30.
Reading paper books remains the most popular format among Bulgarians (61%). Just over a fifth (21%) prefer e-books. Paper editions remain popular among the older population. Only 4% of Bulgarian citizens listen to audiobooks.
