Nearly one in three children in Bulgaria lives in material deprivation, according to data from the National Statistical Institute for last year, reported by BNR’s Victoria Todorova. Children in the Roma community are the most affected, with more than two-thirds of them living without basic necessities. Among Bulgarian children, the rate is below one in five, and among children of Turkish origin, nearly one in three.

The NSI report 'Children in Bulgaria in 2024' says that families with children need more support, especially with things like leisure, culture and nutrition.
The most common deprivation among children is the inability to go on holiday away from home for at least one week a year. Around a quarter of parents cannot afford to take their children on vacation. Nearly 20% of children lack equipment for outdoor play and do not participate in sports or music activities. Another 7% do not have a suitable space for studying.
