The European Commission and the European Central Bank are expected to publish their convergence reports on Bulgaria’s readiness to adopt the euro on 4 June. If the reports are positive, Bulgaria will be able to adopt the euro on 1 January 2026.
The final decision on eurozone membership will be made by the Eurogroup — a body where finance ministers of eurozone countries coordinate economic policies and make key decisions about the shared currency — and the Council of the EU. According to the Ministry of Finance, this decision is expected to be announced in July.
Two weeks ago, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov commented, “We expect a positive convergence report for our accession to the eurozone, but until it is published, everything is hypothetical.”
