The National Revenue Agency is inspecting currency exchange offices due to increased interest in buying euros. Within just one week, the exchange of Bulgarian leva into euros increased by 43%, the agency’s director, Rumen Spetsov, announced in Parliament. Journalist Nataliya Ganchovska has also reported cases where the base rate at which euros are bought has been altered.
Over 300 exchange bureaus across Bulgaria have been ordered to undergo inspections to examine how transactions are conducted and whether all obligations under the Currency Act and the Anti-Money Laundering Act are being met. Spetsov noted that exchange bureaus are not required to request an ID card or verify the origin of the funds for amounts up to 10,000 leva.
