One million vehicles have passed through the Greek Promachonas checkpoint on the border with Bulgaria (opposite Kulata) since the beginning of the year, the chairman of the Union of Police Officers of the Greek Prefecture of Serres, Yiannis Kounios, told the Greek state television ERT, BTA reported.
Traffic has increased by 30% after the abolition of passport control.
Today, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, is visiting Bulgaria. The program of his visit includes a visit to the Kulata-Promachonas border crossing. At a meeting with the European Commissioner, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov stressed that Bulgaria contributes significantly to the security of the Schengen area. The protection of the external European border and the prevention of illegal migration remain key priorities for Bulgaria He highlighted the support provided by the EC to Bulgaria in the amount of over 300 million euros over the last three years - for integrated border surveillance, off-road vehicles and drones.
