A day before the third motion of no confidence in Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov’s cabinet was due to be voted on, the Velichie party submitted a fourth motion.
Today, the National Assembly debated the no-confidence vote proposed by Vazrazhdane, citing “the government’s failures in fiscal policy and eurozone accession.” Under parliamentary rules, the vote cannot take place until at least 24 hours after the conclusion of the debate.
Meanwhile, the Velichie party — which had supported the Vazrazhdane motion alongside MECH — has tabled its own motion of no confidence. The party’s parliamentary group leader, Ivelin Mihaylov, told BNR’s Maria Fileva that this latest move was prompted by the government’s “failure to address Bulgaria’s environmental crisis.”
“In this 40°C heat, think about the 60,000 rubbish dumps across the country — how they’re festering and spreading, and how all this decay is evaporating into the atmosphere. That’s why we hold this government accountable. For six months, they’ve failed to take a single step towards solving this problem,” Mihaylov said, explaining the rationale behind the motion.
The fourth consecutive motion of no confidence was co-signed by Vazrazhdane and MECH.
Previous no-confidence motions brought by Vazrazhdane and MECH, which cited failures in foreign policy and anti-corruption measures, have all been unsuccessful.
