The U.S Department of State has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Bulgaria of Naval Strike Missile Coastal Defense System (NSM SDS) and related equipment for an estimated cost of USD 620 million. The principal contractor will be Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace AS, located in Kongsberg, Norway, but U.S. approval is required because these systems are patented in the United States. Additionally, the ammunition for the systems is supplied by the American company Raytheon.
NOMADS is a mobile air defense system designed for deployment closer to or directly on the front line. It can defend against small, short-range targets as drones and cruise missiles, providing unique protection against threats like those currently seen in Ukraine.
Bulgaria chose the NSM CDS system, with a range of 250 km, over the Swedish RBS-15.
