All serious fires in the country have been contained, said Alexander Dzhartov, Chief Commissioner and Director of the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Civil Protection, quoted by BTA. He added that efforts are currently underway to purchase new firefighting equipment, protective gear and reconnaissance drones to help fire departments respond more quickly and effectively in future.
Valentin Vassilev, director of the Regional Fire Service in Blagoevgrad, said that the firefighting teams are being withdrawn from the scene of the blaze in the Pirin Mountains, but after an assessment, some of them may return to stand watch. He said that there will most likely be some internal pockets of fire that need to be dealt with, as the area is extensive.
It is not yet clear whether the fire has spread to Pirin National Park. Following an inspection near the park yesterday, Emil Iliev, mayor of the municipality of Strumyani, confirmed that a large area had burned down, as reported by Ekaterina Nikolova from BNR Radio Blagoevgrad.
