The first quaternary wastewater treatment plant in Bulgaria was opened today in the village of Benkovski, Maritsa Municipality. “Today we are launching a pilot project that marks the beginning of a new stage in water management in Bulgaria. A project that enables the treatment of so-called micro-pollution — some of the finest and hardest-to-remove contaminants in nature. We all know that hormones, antibiotics, pesticides and microplastics are found in the water. These are substances that cannot be seen, but can cause serious environmental and health problems, which is why this project is so important”, said Bulgaria’s Minister of Environment and Water, Manol Genov.
He noted that in several European countries, such as Germany and Switzerland, quaternary treatment is already the standard.
