On September 15, 2025, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Sofia, Eleonora Mitrofanova, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria in connection with the deliberate violation of Polish airspace by Russian military drones on September 10, 2025, said the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Guergana Karadjova, Director General for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, handed a written demarche to Ambassador Mitrofanova, in which Bulgaria strongly condemns the deliberate violation of Polish airspace and expresses its solidarity with its ally.
''Bulgaria considers these irresponsible actions by the Russian side, including the incursion of a Russian drone into Romanian airspace on September 13, 2025, a threat to the security of European citizens, regional stability and international peace'', the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
''Bulgaria calls on Russia to immediately cease its attacks against Ukraine and its dangerous provocations against European countries, and to engage seriously in meaningful negotiations to end hostilities as a first step toward achieving a lasting and just peace'', the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted.
Ambassador Mitrofanova called the accusations unfounded and stated that there is no evidence of Russian involvement in the incident. She emphasized that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation had no plans to strike targets on Polish territory.
In her words, the range of the unmanned aerial vehicles used during the strike on Ukrainian military infrastructure on the night of September 10, 2025, does not exceed 700 kilometers — making it impossible for them to have entered Polish airspace, according to a post on the official Facebook page of the Russian Embassy in Bulgaria.
According to Mitrofanova, ''this is a planned provocation, primarily benefitng Ukraine, as well as certain European countries that are trying to unite society around the 'Russian threat".
