Belgium and the Netherlands will transfer seven Tripartite mine countermeasure vessels to Bulgaria free of charge, Naval News reported, citing the Belgian Ministry of Defence. The decision was approved by the Belgian government on September 12.
Bulgaria will cover the costs of restoring the vessels to full operational readiness. Bulgaria will also provide Ukraine with the necessary assistance in the form of training and coaching for crews of this class of vessels. In June 2025, Belgium and the Netherlands donated two MCM vessels to Ukraine.
Bulgaria’s Minister of Defence Atanas Zapryanov announced the deal on September 9 in Varna. Thus, Bulgaria will have a fleet of 10 mine countermeasure vessels of this class. The first vessel arrived in Varna in 2009, and two more were delivered in 2020, Naval News recalls.
