The Bulgarian men’s national volleyball team defeated Portugal 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-13) to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the World Championship in the Philippines. This marks the first time since 2010 that Bulgaria has reached the top eight teams in the world.
Alexander Nikolov was Bulgaria’s top scorer with 19 points — 17 from attacks, one block, and one ace. Martin Atanasov added nine points, while captain Alex Grozdanov contributed eight.
Gianlorenzo Blengini’s squad finished first in Group E after wins over Germany (3-0), Slovenia (3-2), and Chile (3-0).
The Bulgarian team now awaits to learn its quarter-final opponent — the winner of today’s match between the United States and Slovenia, scheduled for 3:00 pm Bulgarian time.
