The South-Central region of Bulgaria is the region of the EU with the highest mortality rate from diseases of the cardiovascular system – 66.2% of all deaths, Eurostat data show. This is double the average for the EU for this indicator, according to which these diseases, including heart attacks, heart diseases, hypertensive diseases and diseases of pulmonary circulation accounted for 32.4% of all deaths in the EU.
Bulgaria’s South-Central region encompasses the regions Kardzhali, Pazardzhik, Plovdiv, Smolyan and Haskovo. It is followed by Romania’s Southwest with a share of 65.1%.
