A new 10-kilometer section of Hemus Motorway (A2) between the Boaza and Dermantsi interchanges has been opened to traffic. Another 3 km will be opened in November. Construction also continues on sections 2 and 3 of Hemus Motorway, which span a total of 36.28 km and will reach the junction for the towns of Pleven and Lovech, announced Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Ivan Ivanov at the opening ceremony.
Except for the section near Sofia, the A2 motorway route passes through Northern Bulgaria and will connect cities such as Pleven, Ruse, Lovech, Veliko Tarnovo, Targovishte, Shumen and Varna. Its total length is 418 km, making it the longest motorway in Bulgaria. Construction began in 1974, but only about half of the motorway has been built so far.
