An amateur marathon under the motto "Let's Outrun Dementia" will be held at 9 am in Sofia's South Park on October 11. The initiative is by the civil association "Alzheimer Bulgaria" and aims to encourage active living as a prevention against dementia. The run will take place for the seventh consecutive year as part of the regular weekend 5km Run initiative.
According to the World Health Organization, about 18 million people worldwide suffer from Alzheimer's disease, and their number will triple in the next 20 years due to the trend of population aging.
There are no statistics on patients with this disease in Bulgaria, but it is estimated that nearly 70 thousand are affected. Making a diagnosis takes between several months and several years.
In order to reduce the risk of this disease, it is recommended that people after the age of 50 play sports, communicate, and memorize new facts.
Today's initiative is being held in support of people with dementia and their families and aims to motivate them to exercise regularly in order to slow down the progression of the disease.
Through the event, several international days dedicated to mental health and older people are raised awareness of – World Alzheimer's Day (September 21), International Day of Older Persons (October 1), and World Mental Health Day (October 10).
