Bulgaria’s Vertical Gas Corridor project is on track for completion by the end of 2026, according to Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov, who stressed that it would help the country maintain its strategic position in South East Europe.
Accompanied by Dan Jørgensen, the European Commissioner for Energy, Stankov inspected Lot 3 of the project — the section running from the village of Rupcha to the village of Vetrino. This major infrastructure project will connect Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Hungary and Slovakia, enabling Bulgaria to transport larger volumes of gas in multiple directions.
The minister emphasised that the project will double the capacity at Bulgaria’s exit point to Romania, increasing it from 5 to 10 billion cubic metres.
Vladimir Malinov, CEO of grid operator Bulgargaztrans, emphasised the importance of the corridor at a time when Europe is moving away from Russian gas and will ultimately depend on liquefied natural gas from the US and other sources, including the Caspian region.
