Prokopan is the only railway tunnel on the Plovdiv-Burgas line. This became clear during a visit by Deputy Minister of Transport Lyuben Nanov, who was on-site to see the progress in the modernization of the Orizovo-Mihaylovo railway section. The facility is part of the large-scale rehabilitation project of the Plovdiv-Burgas railway line. Chirpan Tunnel is 744 meters long and is one of the most complex facilities on the entire railway route. It provides a direct connection that bypasses Chirpan Station and takes transit traffic outside the city.
"The tunnel will allow trains to pass at speeds of up to 160 km/h," Deputy Minister Nanov commented. He added that the completion of the facility is expected to take place by the end of 2026, when it will ensure significantly faster and safer travel between Orizovo and Mihailovo.
