Protesting farmers in Greece have used heavy machinery and tractors to break through a gendarmerie blockade and head towards the border with Bulgaria. BNR correspondent Keti Trencheva received the information from Alexander Stamboliyski, a Bulgarian truck driver travelling to Alexandria.
The ongoing farmers' protests have blocked the main highways in Greece for several days, but the driver explained that alternative routes have been made available. He said that the protesters are now attempting to block the highway between Kulata and Serres, which would result in the closure of the international road.
The protests were triggered by delays in paying agricultural subsidies due to a corruption scandal at the Greek agricultural payments agency OPEKEPE, despite the government having started to pay the subsidies in instalments.
