Around 190,000 students are currently studying at 51 higher education institutions, 38 of which are state universities, said Georgi Stoychev, Executive Director of Open Society Institute, on the occasion of Student’s Day. The number of international students in Bulgaria is growing, and they now account for 9% of all students.
Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" has the largest number of students – 19,799, followed by the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) with 17,092, and Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv with 16,285, while 12 higher education institutions have fewer than 1,000 students, according to data from the Bulgarian University Ranking System.
