The frescoes of the Boyana Church are brought to life through a series of striking photographs in the newly published large-format art book Boyana Church: At the Dawn of the Renaissance. More than fifty murals have been captured in remarkable detail, illuminating their sculptural depth, chromatic richness, and subtle psychological nuances.
The volume will be launched on 11 December at 6:30 p.m. in the newly opened gallery of the Sredets Cultural Centre — St John of Rila — at 2A Krakra Street.
The Church of St Nicholas and St Panteleimon, located in Sofia's Boyana district and widely known as the Boyana Church, is renowned for its exceptional medieval frescoes. These include the donor portraits from 1258–59 of the sebastokrator Kaloyan and his wife Desislava, and depictions of the Bulgarian royal family of the time: Tsar Konstantin Tih Asen (r. 1257–77) and Tsaritsa Irina. In 1979, the church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The 184-page album is published in three languages: Bulgarian, English and French.
