The National Gallery presents its first
immersive exhibition dedicated to one of the most significant figures in the
history of Bulgarian National Revival art – Zahari Zograf.
The experience lasts 20 minutes and with
the help of new technology reproduces religious and secular masterpieces, as well
as elements of the artist’s creative process.
The exhibition includes his icons, drawings, secular portraits, murals, letters and documents. The exhibition, which opens today and can be seen until January 30, is inspired by the desire to popularize the art of the Bulgarian National Revival – a time of economic, social and cultural upsurge, inextricably linked to the struggle for church and national independence.
Zahari Zograf (1810–1853) was a central figure in the transition between church and secular painting on the path of the Europeanization of Bulgarian art. He painted portraits, plants, animals, nudes, landscapes and ancient ruins, and introduced images of Bulgarian and Slavic saints into church mural ensembles.
