The “Yes, Bulgaria” party, part of the We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB) coalition, has submitted legislative amendments that would bar the National Protection Service (NSO) from guarding MPs, with the exception of the Speaker of Parliament, Bulgarian National Radio reporter Maria Fileva said.
'The protection of Delyan Peevski must be withdrawn — it is illogical and based on a false alert,' said party co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev. He added that Peevski, the leader of DPS–New Beginning, was being guarded not only by the NSO, but also by the Special Counter-Terrorism Unit, the police, the gendarmerie, and private security. Mirchev urged that the proposal be fast-tracked for debate in the plenary, warning that if it is not considered between the two readings of the state budget, it will be resubmitted.
“Yes, Bulgaria” is also proposing an amendment to the Anti-Money Laundering Act to ensure that the “Magnitsky” sanctions can finally be applied to Peevski, the party’s other co-chair, Bozhidar Bozhanov, said. He said he hoped the no-confidence motion being debated in parliament today would be backed by MPs with political instinct and that a genuine “sanitary cordon” would be formed around Peevski, echoing the stance taken by protesters in the streets.
