A virtual puppet theatre museum is set to open on 15 December in the lobby of the Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts (NATFA) in Sofia. The project aims to preserve the cultural heritage of Bulgarian puppet theatre in the long term.
"Puppets are physical artefacts that age over time and can be irreversibly damaged if not stored properly. Digitising them and presenting them online will allow students, researchers and puppet theatre enthusiasts from around the world to explore the work of Bulgarian puppet artists over the decades,” said the institution.
After the launch, the museum will be freely accessible online, and its creators hope that over time it will be expanded with puppets from across the country, representing past, present, and future performances.

The project is carried out with financial support from Sofia Municipality and is inspired by international practices in the digitisation of cultural heritage, adapted to the context of Bulgarian puppet theatre.
