At an official ceremony at Graf Ignatievo airbase, Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov announced that all eight F-16 Block 70 aircraft under Bulgaria’s first contract with the United States had been delivered.

“This is a clear demonstration of the development and deepening of the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the United States. We are also implementing several other significant projects with the US and expect the first Striker combat vehicles early next year,” Zapryanov said. He added that negotiations are planned for a coastal defence system to protect Bulgaria’s maritime territories.

The project to acquire a new type of combat aircraft forms part of efforts to rearm the Bulgarian armed forces. Zapryanov said the F-16 Block 70 jets are a key combat platform for Bulgaria and noted that it is no coincidence they are being purchased from the country’s main strategic ally.
