Bulgaria and Italy will jointly build facilities in the Kabile military area. The agreement was signed by Bulgaria’s Minister of Defense Atanas Zapryanov and his Italian counterpart Guido Crosetto at the Bezmer Air Base.
The two ministers noted that the signed agreement marks the beginning of the construction of joint facilities in Kabile. Additional technical arrangements and annexes are to be developed to ensure its full implementation.
Since 2022, Italy has been commanding NATO’s battlegroup in Bulgaria, which was established following Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Plans provide that, if necessary, more than 3,000 troops could be concentrated in Kabile to defend NATO’s eastern flank.
Kabile has been a strategic military center since Roman times. Very close to the site are the Bezmer military air base and the Sarafovo civilian airport.
