The British electronic publication The Independent has made a ranking of the 10 most attractive, alternative destinations for short and affordable breaks in Europe in 2026. These are places offering quality at affordable prices for a variety of experiences from history and architecture to nature and gastronomy.
Sarajevo is at the top, combining Ottoman heritage, with low prices for Turkish coffee, food, transport, museums, historical sites and cultural events.
Sofia ranks immediately after the Bosnian capital. It is presented as a city with a compact center, convenient for walking, combining antiquity with Byzantine and Soviet architecture. The nearby Vitosha Mountain complements the opportunities for nature tourism.
The next cities presented in the ranking are Braga, Bucharest, Krakow, Tirana, Seville, Budapest and Thessaloniki.
