Today marks 45 years since the proclamation of Constantine-Cyril the Philosopher and his brother Methodius as co-patrons of Europe. This was done in 1980 with the apostolic letter Egregiae Virtutis by Pope John Paul II.

The patrons of Europe are Christian saints who are venerated in the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church as heavenly protectors and intercessors before God of all Europe. Six saints have been proclaimed as patrons of Europe: Saint Benedict of Nursia, Saints Cyril and Methodius, Saint Catherine of Siena, Saint Bridget, Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.
