As of January 1, the euro is the official currency in Bulgaria. Until the end of this month, payments can still be made in Bulgarian leva, but electronic payments will only be accepted in euros, as BNR reporter Marta Mladenova reminds us. The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) will exchange leva for euros free of charge and indefinitely. All commercial banks and the national postal service, Bulgarian Posts, will also provide this service until the end of June.
In connection with Bulgaria's accession to the Eurozone as its 21st member, the other 20 national central banks of Eurozone member states will also exchange lev banknotes for euros until 2 March 2026, at a fixed exchange rate of 1 euro = 1.95583 leva. No fees, commissions or other charges will be levied for the exchange. The daily exchange limit is capped at BGN 2,000 per customer/transaction per day, according to the BNB.
