As of today, Bulgaria is the 21st member of the eurozone.
In a video address marking the country's accession, Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commissioner for Economic Affairs, emphasised that the transition from the lev to the euro signifies more than just a change of currency; it places Bulgaria at the heart of Europe. According to him, the euro will lead to more investment, more growth, and more jobs.
Bulgaria is now "in a better position to seize the opportunities of euro membership — simpler payments, easier travel and lower interest rates," he added.
The adoption of the euro comes exactly 19 years after Bulgaria joined the EU.
