Bansko welcomes 2026 amid euro switch and packed hotels

With guests from three continents, the ski resort of Bansko celebrated the New Year with two currencies in use – Bulgarian leva until midnight and euros from 1 January, BNR reporter Kety Trencheva said.

The tourism industry had expressed concern about the currency change during the height of New Year’s Eve celebrations. Some temporary difficulties in adjusting payment systems were reported, but they did not spoil the festivities, as most businesses and visitors were prepared with cash.

Bansko saw out 2025 and welcomed 2026 with fully booked hotels, busy restaurants, and bustling taverns.
