Thousands
of kukeri (mummers) in traditional and attractive costumes will
parade on January 4 in the center of Blagoevgrad at the Survakar
Games Festival. Seventeen local groups and one from Petrich will
present customs and rituals characteristic of the region.
“The
ringing of bells, dynamic compositions and skilful re-enactments of
ancient traditions will transform the main pedestrian street ‘Todor
Alexandrov’ and ‘Georgi Izmirliev’ Square into a stage of
living heritage, passed down and preserved by generations,” the
organizers from the Blagoevgrad Municipality say.
The
festival will bring together participants of different ages – from
children who are stepping onto the path of traditions for the first
time, to adults who preserve and pass on centuries-old customs. A
competent jury will choose the best performances in different
categories, assessing authenticity, vision and stage presence.
