According to an assessment by the U.S. Department of State, Bulgaria is among the safest tourist destinations in Europe, classified at Level 1 (“Exercise Normal Precautions”). It stands alongside other Eastern European countries with low risk and no serious terrorist threats, making it an attractive alternative to more crowded and higher-risk Western European destinations. Bulgaria stands out for its rich cultural and historical heritage, including Thracian architectural monuments, with significantly fewer security concerns.

As American tourists plan their European trips for 2026, the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisories provide key information about potential risks, BGNES reports.

These advisories are updated on a regular basis and take into account factors such as terrorism, crime, civil unrest, and health risks. They use a four-level system to help citizens make informed decisions.
