Preliminary data suggest that timber harvests in Bulgaria reached a record low in 2025, according to the Executive Forest Agency. Last year, only around 80% of the timber planned for harvest was transported under the forestry management plan.
This volume is also around 30% lower than that transported in 2018, the last year in which forestry plans were fully met, according to the Bulgarian Branch Chamber of Woodworking and Furniture Industry (BBCWFI).
Petar Dishkov, a chamber expert, said the figures were not surprising given the decline in forest management in recent years. This has led to deteriorating tree health and an increased risk of forest fires, which have been particularly severe over the past two years.
The shortfall in timber supply has also reduced activity in woodworking companies, contributing to closures and financial difficulties in the sector.
