Today is Bulgarian Cinema Day

Today, Bulgaria celebrates Bulgarian Cinema Day, a public holiday honouring the country’s filmmakers. It commemorates the premiere of the first Bulgarian feature film, Bulgaran Is Gallant, on 13 January 1915 at the “Modern Theatre” cinema in Sofia. This landmark film was created by the legendary filmmaker Vasil Gendov, who served as its writer, director and lead actor, alongside actress Mara Lipina.

To mark the 90th anniversary of this milestone, the National Film Centre established the holiday in 2005.
