“Euro” has been chosen as the most emblematic word in Bulgaria for 2025 according to the results of a poll conducted by the popular spelling website Kak se pishe? (“How Is It Spelled?”). A total of 42.5% of respondents selected the name of the common European currency, which Bulgaria adopted on January 1, as the word of the year.

In second place, with nearly 33% of the votes, is the word “bezobrazie” (“outrage” or “disgrace”), which gained popularity during parliamentary debates.

With about 25% support each, the words “protest” and “volleyball” follow, according to data from the fifth consecutive annual survey by Kak se pishe?. These terms are linked to the anti-corruotion protests at the end of the year that led to the resignation of the government, as well as to the success of Bulgaria’s men’s national volleyball team, who became world runners-up.

In 2024, the word of the year was “Schengen,” which, according to the jury, clearly points to Bulgarians’ European orientation.
