16 February 2026 marks 90 years since the first Bulgarian broadcast abroad. To commemorate the anniversary, BNR’s Radio Bulgaria, the successor to Radio Sofia, will launch a series of initiatives.
One of these initiatives is ‘A lesson on Bulgaria’, in which pupils from Bulgarian Sunday schools abroad present their own audio and video content. Their stories draw on knowledge gained during visits to Bulgaria as part of the Ministry of Education and Science’s national programme, ‘Educational Routes’.
Through ‘A lesson on Bulgaria’, Radio Bulgaria has invited students who participated in the programme in 2025 to share what they have learned about their country.
With the support of their teachers, the pupils have created and submitted audio, photographic, and video contributions. There were no restrictions — they were free to express their creativity, which they did to great effect.
The initiative aims to capture the attention of Bulgarian children living abroad and to foster their interest in the Bulgarian language, history, and geography, harnessing the reach of a media platform such as BNR. We will soon discover whether we have succeeded as the materials begin to be published.
How did it all begin?
At the start of the 2025/26 school year, Radio Bulgaria invited the leadership of Sunday schools abroad that had participated in the 2025 national programme “Educational Routes” to take part in the 'A lesson on Bulgaria' initiative.

By the deadline of 30 September, 17 Bulgarian schools abroad had confirmed their participation. By the end of October, 11 schools had submitted completed video and photo stories, which were then processed by the Radio Bulgaria team.
From January 2026, these stories — now in a multimedia format combining text, images, and sound — will begin to be published on the BNR website. They will also be shared via the media’s social media channels, and audio versions of the lessons will be broadcast on “Radio Bulgaria Hour” on BNR-Hristo Botev and in our daily podcast, “Bulgaria Today.”
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the students and teachers who took part in, and are now contributing to, the “A Class on Bulgaria” initiative.
