The latest Eurostat data show that Bulgaria has the highest fertility rate in the EU. In 2024, it was 1.72 live births per woman, while the EU average was 1.38. After Bulgaria come France and Hungary with 1.66 and 1.55 children per woman. However, demographers warn that Bulgaria's first place does not mean the end of the demographic crisis. The country's coefficient is still below the limit of 2.1 needed for natural reproduction of the population.
Data show that Bulgarian
women are also the youngest mothers in the EU. Women in Bulgaria have
their first child at an average age of about 27 years, which is 3
years earlier in comparison to the average woman in Europe.
